Wintergreen is the Outdoor Lover’s Winter Wonderland
For the outdoor lover, there’s no better place to spend your fun time than Wintergreen Resort.
Just a quick 30-minute drive from the Iris Inn, Wintergreen offers a whole host of fun activities.
Certainly, skiing and snowboarding top the list of fun winter sports and Wintergreen does not disappoint! There are many slopes to choose from with varying skill levels. And there is also Terrain Park, voted 1stplace by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine.
Here you can hone your freestyle skills with a progression of features that accommodate a variety of skill levels. Wintergreen frequently changes the layout of the 40+ park features so you have something new to look forward to every time you ski or ride.
At any given time, you may find:
- Spines and hips
- Tabletops and fun boxes
- Rainbow rails, straight rails, s-rails, down-kinks, and battleships
Take The Plunge!
Wintergreen also has Virginia’s largest tubing park, The Plunge. It’s like being on top of a 10-story building and looking over a field that’s longer than three football fields!
Now imagine tubing down that field at speeds reaching 30 mph. What’s more, you don’t have to walk back up to enjoy the thrill again. Wintergreen’s conveyor lift will take you and your tube back to the top, so you can enjoy the ride again and again.
It’s fun for the whole family! And on the weekends from December through February, Ridgely’s Fun Park is open for the kids. Your kids can play in the snow and take advantage of the gentle hill for tubing. Wintergreen’s mascot, Ridgely the Bear often makes guest appearances.
Ice Skating at Shamokin Ice
In 2010, Wintergreen added ice skating to its menu of winter wonderland activities. Shamokin Ice is just off the Blue Ridge Terrace and is conveniently located near Wintergreen’s restaurants, The Edge and The Copper Mine Bistro.
The rink is 45 x 90 and will accommodate up to 60 people per session. There’s plenty of modern refrigeration to keep the ice perfect!
Playing Hard Means Working Up an Appetite
So, what do you do once you’ve had a day’s worth of outdoor fun? It’s time to eat! Wintergreen has three public restaurants to choose from.
The Edge is a casual neighborhood place to meet and eat. With spectacular views, it overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains. Offering salads, pasta, burgers and an array of popular entrees, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a great meal. There’s also an energetic bar and live entertainment seasonally.
Stoney Creek Bar & Grill is just a short drive down the mountain and provides one of the best settings to enjoy Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. It, too, has a casual, friendly atmosphere and overlooks Stoney Creek’s beautiful golf course. Sunday brunch is available and features many tasty American dishes. Open April-November.
The Copper Mine Bistro is located in the heart of the Mountain Village. Here you’ll find Mediterranean food at its best, including the restaurant’s signature dishes, Tomahawk Bone-In Pork Chop, Lobster Mac and Cheese, and Grilled Lamb Chops with Peperonata. Enjoy a handcrafted cocktail or a glass of wine, too. Dinner reservations are highly recommended.
From snowboarding, skiing, tubing, ice skating, and good food, Wintergreen Resort offers a winter wonderland of fun. When you return to Iris Inn, you’ll continue to enjoy the gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a luxurious room.
