Central Virginia Breweries Offer More Than Just Great Beer
“Where can we go to find good Virginia beer?” That’s a question we often get asked by guests of the Iris Inn. And it’s one we love to answer! Central Virginia breweries craft their beer with the greatest of care and it shows. That’s why we recommend the Brew Ridge Trail.
You’ll find not only excellent breweries but some great food as well! Here’s a rundown and what you can expect to find from each one.
Brew Ridge Trail Breweries
Blue Mountain Brewery is located in Afton and its sister brewery, Blue Mountain Barrel House, is located in Arrington. The Afton brewery has a full restaurant while Blue Mountain Barrel House has seasonal food trucks.
The beer is brewed from deep well water and from the very best hops and barley malt in the world. Blue Mountain Brewery has won medals from the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival for their Blue Reserve beer.
In 2010-2011, they were honored to be the only brewery in the state of Virginia to hold back-to-back gold medals from the Great American Beer Festival.
Devil’s Backbone brews traditionally inspired beers, and also uses unconventional techniques and ingredients to create more eclectic brews. Some beers are “very approachable,” while others are more intense.
There are two locations. Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows is located on 100 acres in Nelson County and has a full restaurant. Outpost Brewery & Tap Room is located in Lexington, VA.
South Street Brewery, Charlottesville’s longest running brewery and pub, offers original venerated brews and brews that reflect the heart of American craft brewing with diversity and experimentation. Food offerings lean heavily toward local artisans.
Star Hill Brewery prides itself on brewing authentic, high-quality beer using raw materials that are true to the beer style for that beer’s country of origin. Real ingredients like cherries are used instead of syrup.
The types of malt added to their mash determine the body and color of the beer. The Reviver Red IPA’s red color is derived from a combination of wheat, crystal, pilsner and chocolate malts, NOT dye or food color. There are two locations, Crozet and Roanoke. Food trucks are available during events.
Wild Wolf Brewing Company, located in Nellysford, has 6 year-round beers and 5-6 seasonal beers, all made on site. Currently, they’ve won 17 awards for their beers, including the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Gold Medal!
What’s more, the brewery has received the Green Brewery of the Year Award 3 years in a row, 2015, 2016, and 2017, from the Virginia Green Travel Alliance.
