Big Wins for Governor’s Cup Gold Medalists¬†
Ready to taste some gold medal winning Virginia wine? So are we! And that’s good news. Here’s why.
The Virginia Wineries Association Governor‚Äôs Cup¬ģ¬†Virginia Wine Competition celebrated its 36th year of winemaking competition. And what a competition it was!
Revamped in 2012, the Governor’s Cup¬ģ has become one of the most thorough and stringent competitions in the US. And Virginia winemakers were up for the challenge.
With 442 entries for both red and white wines from 100 Virginia wineries,
99 wines scored a 90 or higher on a 100-point range. We’re proud to say that this is the highest number of gold medals ever given in this highly prestigious wine competition.
An affidavit was included with each entry certifying that the wine was produced with 100% Virginia fruit and vineyard particulars. Grower names and location, information on alcohol, acidity or basicity (pH), as well as residual sugar, were also required.
Judges had to rank each wine based on a unified scoring system. Considering the competition, it was no easy task!
Why the Governor’s Cup Yielded So Many Winners
Judges commented that the overall caliber of wines at the Governor’s Cup¬ģ was truly outstanding. The wines sent for a final round of judging were, on average, two points higher than in previous years, which is significant.¬†
Strong wine categories for the gold medal-winning wines included:
- 36 Bordeaux Blend wines
- 11 Petit Verdots
- 11 Viogniers
- 8 Chardonnays
- 5 Petit Mansengs
- 3 Tannats and 3 red blends with Tannat
- 4 dessert wines
Of the gold medal winners, twelve top scoring white and red wines became part of the¬†Governor‚Äôs Cup Case¬ģ and will showcase Virginia’s top wines. You can get the full list of winners here.
