For a selection of fantastic full-bodied red wines, try out Barboursville Vineyards and enjoy lunch at the winery restaurant, Palladio (be sure to make reservations beforehand. If you’d like us to make the reservations for you, click here.).

We recommend the scenic drive from the Iris Inn to Barboursville Vineyards. Take Exit 124 and take 250 East to Shadwell. Take 22N which becomes 231. Stay on 231 into Gordonsville, and then take 33 into Barboursville. This drive moves through a picturesque area full of horse farms, lavish scenery, and peaceful drives. (This part of Virginia, the Keswick area, also happens to be home to actress Sissy Spacek and author John Grisham.)

For medium-bodied red wines, we recommend vineyards that use Cabernet Franc as their blending grape.

For a blended grape red wine, we recommend the Cabernet Franc at King Family Vineyard in Crozet, Virginia. The Cabernet Frant is excellently displayed a blended wine with the award-winning Meritage.

If you’re also looking for some entertainment while sipping your wine, enjoy a King Family polo match held every Sunday through mid-October.

Other recommended wineries with notable blended grape red wines include Pollak Vineyards in Greenwood, Virginia and Grace Estate Winery in Crozet, Virginia.

For true grape red wines, we recommend Afton Mountain Vineyards in Afton, Virginia. Pass by the tasting, though, and save your palate for a bottle of their Cabernet Franc reserve, which you can enjoy out on the patio, overlooking the mountain scenery.
