March has a lot going for it. From St. Patrick’s Day to the Virginia Festival of the Book, there are many things happening this month. The 59th Annual Highland Maple Festival is right around the corner and we cannot wait for it.
For two glorious weekends in March, Monterey and McDowell, Virginia will transform into the delicious festival of your lumberjack dreams. Thousands of people flock the hills to experience a trip back in time the 2nd and 3rd weekends of March each year. There will be live blue grass music, clogging shows, locally made crafts and gifts, a Civil War camp reenactment, and all the food you can devour. Over 150 artisans will have tents and booths showcasing country and contemporary goods. There’ll be everything from woodworking to jewelry to photography and much more.
Did you know:
Maple Syrup contains iron, potassium, magnesium & phosphorus – and has a higher calcium content that milk. it also contains small amounts of amino acids, proteins & vitamins B2, B5 & niacin. It takes approximately 40 quarts of sugar water to make one quart of maple syrup. There’s plenty more to learn about your favorite, natural sweetener at the festival!
The best part though is the food. Various local restaurants and community buildings will be serving pancake dinners, maple donuts, maple candy, and even maple glazed chicken! Sit back with a smothered meal and listen to the area’s finest musicians. Come celebrate the “opening” of trees and learn about traditional syrup making processes. We’ll see you there!
