There is something ethereal about the instrumental strains of Celtic music and the soothing lilt of Irish voices. Throw in the rhythmic taps of Iris step dancing, and it’s an instant transportation to the rolling hills and coastal mountains of the Emerald Isle.
If you’re a fan of Celtic music, then you’re probably familiar with that 90s sensation, “Riverdance” and its follow-up production, “Lord of the Dance.” Three long-term Riverdance participants as well as the lead dancer from “Lord of the Dance” are bringing their talents to the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville with a variety of other talented musicians and vocalists. On March 14, 2014 at 7:00 P.M., “Women of Ireland” will present the of talents of Irish siblings “The O’Neill Sisters,” fiddlers Niamh Fahy and Niamh Gallagher, aerialist Elena Marina, and more.
“The common theme inherent in all performances is the presentation of the most revered qualities of Ireland’s ethnic music which will be transported from the Irish fireside to the international concert hall platform. Special significance is placed on depicting the pure qualities of Irish music in a contemporary setting” (womenofireland.com).
