If you want a unique dining experience with an eclectic array of food and drink, then Greenwood Gourmet Grocery is the ideal destination for you. Owners David and Nina describe their establishment as “a spot of gourmet heaven in an otherwise rural and scantly served run of country,” and the description is certainly accurate.
So, what sorts of wares are there to be found at this quirky location? “The store boasts a full-service espresso bar and stocks a gaudy array of cheeses, cured meats, fish and poultry, and an assortment of cooked foods and sandwiches prepared fresh daily in its kitchen.” Furthermore, Greenwood offers a “far-ranging collection of west coast and international wines along with a beer section so ambitious and exotic (400 brands) as to be unrivaled across the state” (Greenwood Gourmet).
Greenwood’s sandwiches are probably its most celebrated culinary offering. Sample the Chester, a Panini with ham, provolone, and spicy mustard. Taste the Landrance, a baguette with prosciutto and mozzarella. Indulge in the Araucana, an egg salad sandwich with Virginia bacon and tomato. All of Greenwood’s homemade foods “use Albemarle Baking Co. breads, Polyface Farm Beef & Eggs, Thumann’s meats, Free range Chicken” (Greenwood Gourmet).
Greenwood Gourmet Grocery is only 15 minutes away from the Iris Inn, so if you’re planning a getaway at our B&B, be sure to stop by Greenwood for a sandwich, a beer, or a cup of coffee (or all three, if you feel so inclined).
